The Health and Lifestyle 2025<\/em> survey, whose findings on tobacco were published by Addiction Suisse in April, provides an up-to-date overview of trends in tobacco and nicotine consumption in Switzerland<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study also allows for an assessment of how the Swiss public perceives the tobacco industry. The results show that the majority of the population views cigarette manufacturers critically: about 7 out of 10 people believe that the industry acts neither responsibly nor credibly or transparently.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opinions differ regarding the sector\u2019s economic importance: About half of the population considers the tobacco industry an important economic factor, while the other half holds the opposite view. Furthermore, there are clear differences between consumers and non-consumers: the former tend to attribute greater importance to it (about 65% agree with this statement), while the percentage among non-consumers drops to 45%, confirming a more critical view of the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Problematic consumption, particularly among young people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the market has changed significantly: in addition to traditional cigarettes, numerous new products have entered the market in recent years, often accompanied by marketing strategies specifically targeting young people<\/a>. Flavored products such as nicotine pouches, e-cigarettes, or capsule cigarettes play a central role, as they make it easier to start using tobacco and help sustain consumption<\/strong>. More and more young people are starting with e-cigarettes and then switching to a combined use of various nicotine-containing products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondhand exposure is also on the rise: Between 2023 and 2025, an increase in exposure to smoke and aerosols was reported. Young adults are particularly affected: 33.5% of 18- to 24-year-olds say they are frequently or very frequently exposed to this. Furthermore, consumption continues to take place in private settings, including in households with children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, support for protective measures is broad and widespread: over 70% of respondents support a ban on disposable e-cigarettes as well as on advertising for tobacco and nicotine-containing products<\/strong>, and nearly 90% favor expanding smoke-free zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
